How to Change the Sender Name or Email Address for Emails Sent Through Gmail in Arigato Automation
By default, when you send an email using the Gmail integration in Arigato Automation, the sender name that appears in the recipient's inbox is the username associated with your Gmail account. For example, if your primary email address is support@bonify.io, the sender name will be displayed as simply "support." Additionally, there is no option to send email from a different address that might be associated with your Google account, such as an email alias.
To customize the sender name or sender email address, you'll need to stop using the Gmail integration in the app and instead use the SMTP email option within the app. This guide will walk you through the steps.
Step 1: Generate an App Password in Your Google Account
- Log in to your Google Account: Go to your Google Account.
- Navigate to Security Settings: Click on "Security" from the left sidebar.
- Enable 2-Step Verification (if not already enabled): Under "Signing in to Google," ensure that 2-Step Verification is enabled. If it's not, set it up by following Google's prompts.
- Generate App Password: Once 2-Step Verification is enabled, you'll see an option for "App Passwords" under the "Signing in to Google" section. Click on it, select "Other (Custom name)" from the dropdown, and name it "Arigato SMTP." Click "Generate" to receive a 16-character password.
If you have 2 step verification enabled and you do not see the 'App Passwords' option under the "Signing in to Google" section, click on the search icon at the top and type in 'App Password.' This will load a direct link to access the App Password generation page.
Step 2: Configure Custom SMTP Settings in Arigato Automation
- Open Arigato Automation: Access your Arigato Automation account.
- Go to Integrations: Navigate to the "Integrations" section.
- Add SMTP Settings: Select the option to add custom SMTP settings.
- Enter SMTP Details:
- Username: Enter the email address you want to send from (e.g., support@bonify.io).
- Password: Use the App Password you generated in Step 1, not your regular email password.
- SMTP Host: Set this to smtp.gmail.com.
- Port: Use port 465.
- Protocol: Select SSL.
- From Email Address: This will automatically be set to the primary email address for your account. If you wish to use a different email as the From Email address, you'll need to add the email as an alias to the Gmail account that you are using. To add email aliases in Gmail, refer to Google's documentation for sending emails from a different address or alias
Step 3: Customize the Sender Name
- Use Any Sender Name: With the custom SMTP settings configured, the sender name in the recipient's inbox will be determined by the value entered in From Name.
- Double-Check Everything: Before saving, double-check that all settings are correct.
Step 4: Test Your Setup
- Send a Test Email: Use Arigato Automation to send a test email to yourself or a colleague.
- Verify the Sender Name: Check the inbox of the recipient to confirm that the email shows the desired sender name.
Important Notes
- App Password Security: Keep your App Password secure. It grants access to your Gmail account for sending emails via SMTP.
- Gmail Warnings: Gmail may display warnings about the use of custom SMTP settings, but these can generally be ignored as long as the settings are configured correctly.
